20.10.2010: World Statistics Day
European statistics: an information source for everyone
On 20 October, World Statistics Day1 is celebrated for the first time. This event highlights the importance of official statistics in our society. At EU level, efforts have been made over more than 50 years by the National Statistical Offices of the Member States, together with Eurostat, to produce reliable and comparable data. Nowadays European statistics are used in many different ways by a growing number of people.
NSI opens new subsections "Monthly working day adjusted data" and "Monthly seasonally adjusted data" under "Short-term business statistics"
From today, 11.10.2010, on the internet website, NSI opens new subsections "Monthly working day adjusted data" and "Monthly seasonally adjusted data" under "Short-term business statistics". For the first time the working day and seasonally adjusted monthly data are published for industrial production, production in construction and turnover in retail trade for the period 2000 - 2010.
The NSI will participate in the annual meeting of Eurostat with the EU candidate countries
The NSI President – Assoc. Prof. Mariana Kotzeva will take part in the annual meeting of Eurostat with the EU candidate countries, which will be held on 6 – 7 October 2010 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
During the sessions the following issues will be discussed:
• preparation of census 2011.
• Eurostat strategy on training statisticians from the Western Balkan countries.
• international cooperation, mainly participation in international meetings.
The most important forum in European Statistics for this year ended successfully
The NSI gathered in Sofia the Directors General of the National Statistical Institutes of the EU Member States
The 96th Conference of the Directors General of the National Statistical Institutes of the EU Member States (DGINS) has ended. During the three-day forum, issues about the priorities for the next five-year Community Statistical Programme were discussed and the trends for the European Statistical System up to 2020 were set up.

The NSI President – Assoc. Prof. Mariana Kotzeva welcomed the participants. Mr. Walter Radermacher – Director-General of Eurostat wished success and constructive work at the forum and thanked for the good conditions provided for carrying out the event.
The provisional work of the Conference started with a meeting of the Sponsorship Group on “Measuring Progress, Well-being and Sustainable Development”.
The NSI welcomes the Heads of the EU Statistical Offices
Bulgaria will host the 96th Conference of the Directors General of the National Statistical Institutes of the EU Member States (DGINS) and the 6th European Statistical System Committee (ESSC) meeting from 29th September to 1st October 2010. The main theme of the Conference this year is “Measuring Progress, Well-being and Sustainable Development”. The meeting will be held in Boyana Residence.
Sponsorship on Communication, Madrid, 13 September 2010
The President of NSI – Assoc. Prof. Mariana Kotzeva will take part in the Eurostat Sponsorship on Communication Meeting, to be held on 13th September 2010 in Madrid.
The Sponsorship Group consists of the heads of the statistical offices of Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Spain, France, Great Britain, Germany, Lithuania, Sweden, Romania and Switzerland.
Website of Census 2011
The National Statistical Institute has developed a specialized website for the Census of the Population and Housing in Bulgaria in 2011.
At /census2011/ information can be found about the legislation and the census methodology, the history of censuses in Bulgaria from 1880 till today, as well as links to the EUROSTAT website on data from censuses in other EU Member States.
Bulgarian students who live and study abroad visited the NSI
On 27th June 2010 students who are living and studying abroad visited the National Statistical Institute. The visit was organized at the initiative of the Agency for Bulgarians Abroad.
Students who study in different universities in the US, Britain, Austria, Belgium and elsewhere, got acquainted with the Digital Library and expressed their satisfaction with the fact that they will be able to use Bulgarian statistical publications from different parts of the world.
