Crèches in 2024
The number of detached crèches and groups in kindergartens functioning in the country as of 31.12.2024 was 839, with 33 480 places in them.
The number of children accommodated in crèches at the end of the year was 30 367. 15 635 of them were boys, and 14 732 - girls.
The total number of places in crèches per 100 children aged up to 3 years as of 31.12.2024 was 19.9, and the coverage of children brought up in crèches - 18.0 per 100 children aged up to 3 years.
Deficit/surplus by subsectors of ‘General government' sector, fourth quarter of 2024
The data of the ‘General Government’ sector for the fourth quarter of 2024 have been published. Revenues in the amount of BGN 21 979.6 million, expenses in the amount of BGN 23 648.7 million and deficit in the amount of BGN -1 669.1 million were reported.
The data on revenues, expenditures and deficit/surplus of the ‘General Government’ sector are based on cash reports and trial balances on an accrual basis of the budgetary units, as well as quarterly data on the public enterprises reclassified in the sector, calculated by sub-sectors: sub-sector ‘Central Government’, sub-sector ‘Local Government’ and sub-sector ‘Social Insurance Funds’. The deficit/surplus of the ‘General Government’ sector is equal to the sum of the deficit/surplus of the sub-sector, while the total revenue and expenditure are consolidated between the sub-sectors.
The information is published on the basis of Article 3 (2) of Directive 2011/85 of the EU.

Bulgaria and EU: Deficit and debt of General Government Institutional Sector for 2024
In 2024, the government deficit and debt of the EU decreased in relative terms compared to 2023. In the EU, the government deficit to GDP ratio decreased from -3.5% in 2023 to -3.2% in 2024. The government debt to GDP ratio in the EU increased from 80.8% in 2023 to 81.0% at the end of 2024.
Non-financial accounts of the ‘General Government’ sector in 2024
According to preliminary data in 2024 were reported revenues of the ‘General government’ sector amounting to BGN 74 513.02 million and expenditures amounting to BGN 80 671.22 million.
The data of the ‘General Government’ sector are developed using the reports on the implementation of the consolidated fiscal program provided by the Ministry of Finance, as well as assessments of the government enterprises reclassified in the sector.

Non-financial accounts by institutional sectors, fourth quarter of 2024
For the fourth quarter of 2024 the reported Net lending (+)/net borrowing (-) are as follows:
- ‘Total economy’ sector: -2 319.66 million BGN;
- ‘Rest of the World’ sector: 2 319.66 million BGN;
The quarterly non-financial accounts of the ‘General Government’ and ‘Rest of the World’ sectors present, on the basis of national accounts, the economic activity of the government and non-resident units in a manner comparable to other European countries, according to the European System of National Accounts 2010. For this purpose, tables showing revenues and expenses of the ‘General Government’ and ‘Rest of the World’ sectors are developed.
The ‘State Government’ sector data are derived by using the reports on the implementation of the consolidated fiscal program provided by the Ministry of Finance, as well as estimates of the government units requalified in the sector.
‘Rest of the World’ sector data is developed using the Balance of Payments provided by the Bulgarian National Bank, as well as estimates developed by the National Statistical Institute.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, revenues of the ‘General government’ sector amounting to BGN 21 979.63 million and expenditures amounting to BGN 23 648.68 million were reported.

Deficit and Debt of General Government Sector in the Republic of Bulgaria in 2024 (preliminary data)
Preliminary data on Government Deficit/Surplus and Debt for the General Government sector for 2024 have been published. The deficit of the General Government sector for 2024 amounted to -6 158 million BGN or -3.0 % of the Gross domestic product (GDP).
The debt of the General Government sector for 2024 amounted to 48 846 million BGN or 24.1 of GDP.
The statistical data on the activities of the General Government institutional sector, including data on debt and deficit/surplus, is compiled using the harmonized EU methodology.
Air emissions in 2023
In 2023, emissions of sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides, non-methane volatile organic compounds, methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia and fine particulate matter decreased compared to 2022. Emissions of sulphur oxides and carbon dioxide are 44 thousand tons and 34.5 million tons, respectively. Compared to 2022, the largest decrease was observed in emissions of sulphur oxides - 36%, and carbon dioxide - 26%, which is due to a decrease in the amount of fuels used in the energy sector.
Income, Expenditure and Consumption of Households in 2024
According to data from the Household Budget Survey, the annual total income average per capita was 12 857 BGN in 2024, there was an increase of 18.5% compared to 2023.
Bulgarian households spent an average of 11 712 BGN per capita in 2023, or 16.6% more compared to 2023.
In 2024, there were changes in the consumption of basic food products on average per person compared to 2023. The consumption of bread and paste products and of potatoes decreased. The biggest increase was in the consumption of soft drinks, fruit, and meat.
Registrations and bankruptcies of legal entities, First Quarter of 2025
In the first quarter of 2025, the newly registered legal entities in the country were 12 207, and those declared bankrupt - 1 091. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2024, total number of newly registered increased by 9.5%, and that of bankruptcies decreased by 6.4%. Compared to the same quarter of 2024, the total number of newly registered decreased by 0.2%, and that of bankruptcies increased by 10.0%.
