| Описание на данните | Съвкупностите на населението и неговите структури се дефинират като моментни и се установяват към 31.12. на съответната година. Броят и структурите на населението към края на всяка година се изчисляват на базата на данните от предходната година и данните за естественото и механично движение на населението през текущата година. В годините на преброяванията се правят преизчисления на населението в края на съответната година и за предходната. Преизчисляването се извършва въз основа на получените резултати от преброяването на населението и съответните изчисления за естествения и механичния прираст получени от текущата демографска статистика за съответната година. При изчисляване на населението и неговите структури се използва дефиницията "обичайно пребиваващо население". Тя включва лицата, които живеят постоянно (имат настоящ адрес) в страната към 31.12. на съответната година и не са отсъствали от нея за период по-дълъг от 1 година. Демографските прогнози (перспективни проекции на населението) са формални пресмятания, които се извършват при условия, че са възприети определени предположения за бъдещото развитие на раждаемостта, смъртността и миграцията. Те дават представа за възможното бъдещо развитие на населението през прогнозирания период. Използват се различни сценарии за проекциите на населението в зависимост от очакваното социално-икономическо развитие на страната. |

| Обхват | Данните за броя и структурите на населението обхващат населението, живеещо постоянно на територията на страната, независимо от неговото гражданство и статут. В териториален разрез (населени места, общини, области и статистически райони) данните се представят според административно-териториалното деление на страната към 31.12. на съответната година по „настоящ адрес”. Това е адресът, който отговаря на документално заявеното местоживеене на лицето. Последната демографска прогноза, разработена в НСИ, за развитието на населението до 2090 г., е актуализирана през 2023 година. Начална точка на прогнозата е населението на страната към 07.09.2021 г. Прогнозираното население е разпределено по пол и единични възрасти за всяка година от периода. Публикуваните данни са по петгодишни възрастови и календарни периоди.

Механичен прираст на населението В териториален аспект представлява разликата между броя на заселените и броя на изселените лица във и от всяко населено място. Миграционното салдо от външната миграция е разликата между изселените и заселените в страната. Възраст Възрастта на населението в края на годината е изчислена към 31.12. в навършени години въз основа на датата на раждане, т.е. това е възрастта, която лицата са достигнали към 31.12. на съответната година. Под, в, над трудоспособна възраст Възрастовите граници за разпределение на населението по категориите под, във и над трудоспособна възраст са определени съгласно актуалната през съответната година възраст за пенсиониране, приета с Постановление на МС. Коефициентът на възрастова зависимост Показва броя на лицата от населението в „зависимите” възрасти (населението под 15 и на 65 и повече години) на 100 лица от населението в „независимите” възрасти (от 15 до 64 години). Изчислява се в проценти. Коефициент на възрастова зависимост (старши възрасти) Показва броя на лицата на възраст 65 и повече години на 100 лица от населението на възраст от 15 до 64 години. Изчислява се в проценти. Темп на демографско остаряване Темпът на нарастване на относителния дял на населението над трудоспособна възраст (според определената възрастова граница за мъжете и жените през наблюдаваната година) спрямо предходната година. Коефициентът на демографско заместване Отношението между броя на населението във вливащата се възрастова група 15 - 19 години и излизащата група 60 - 64 години от трудоспособното население. | Data description | The population and its structures are defined as of 31.12. of the respective year. The population number and structures at the end of each year are calculated based on the previous year data and data on natural and migration increase during the reference year. In the census years, recalculations of the population are done as of the end of the respective and the previous year. The recalculations are based on the census results and the respective calculations for the natural and migration increase, received from the current demographic statistics for the reference year. The concept "usual residence population" is applied in calculation of the population and its structures. The persons are included, permanently living in the country (having current address) as of 31.12. of the respective year and who have not been absent from the country for more than 1 year period. Demographic projections (the population perspective projections) are calculations done under settled in advance conditions for the future development of the fertility, mortality and migration. They give an idea for the population development during the projected period. Different scenarios for the population projections are used depending on the expected social-economic development of the country. |

Life expectancy at birth of the Bulgarian population, calculated for the period 2022 - 2024, is 75.6 years.
Life expectancy at birth for the male population is 71.9 years, while for the female population it is by 7.4 years higher - 79.3 years.

As of December 31, 2024, the population of Bulgaria was 6 437 360 persons. Compared to 2023, the country’s population had decreased by 8 121 persons, or by 0.13%. There were 53 727 children born in 2024, of which 53 428 (99.4%) - live-born. The number of live births decreased by 3 769 children, or 6.6% compared to the previous year. The number of deaths in 2024 was 100 736 and the crude mortality rate - 15.6‰. Compared to the previous year, the number of deaths had decreased by 270, or by 0.3%.

The National Statistical Institute has published revised data on the number of the population for the period between the two 2011 and 2021 censuses. Considering the difference in the number of the population from the current demographic statistics and the results of the Population and Housing Census in 2021, it is necessary to elaborate the revised estimation of the population.

Life expectancy at birth of the Bulgarian population, calculated for the period 2021 - 2023, is 73.5 years.
Life expectancy at birth for the male population is 69.9 years, while for females it is 7.4 years higher - 77.3 years.

As of December 31, 2023, the population of Bulgaria is 6 445 481 persons. Compared to 2022, the country’s population decreased by 2 229 persons or by 0.03%.
There are 57 478 children born in 2023, of which 57 197 (99.5%) - live born. The number of live births increased by 601 children, or 1.1% compared to the previous year.
The number of deaths in 2023 is 101 006 and compared to the previous year, decreased by 17 808, or by 15.0%.

As of September 7, 2021 there are 2 866 657 households in Bulgaria - private and institutional. Nearly three-quarters (74.9 %) of all households live in cities.
